Approaching the critical period of our first semester, this week was an important, and invaluable one. We welcomed a special guest, architect, and partner of Rafael Vinoly Studio, Andrea Lamberti. She was keen to offer an opinion on three student projects.

Becca was the first to bravely present her conceptual design to Andrea, as well as tutors, Alessandro and Claire. Her project is a wave-like masterplan which aims to minimise the impact of tsunamis on settlements, using innovative forms and irrigation channels. Here she can be seen discussing ideas of permeability and materiality with Andrea.

Jess presented her ideas of underwater habitation in response to hurricane devestation to Andrea through the use of layers of trace, an extremely useful tool to communicate layers of conceptual development. Andrea opened the discussion of how quality of life could be approached when building underwater, and the importance of relevant drawings to communicate that.

Dipen presented some evocative sketches playing with the idea of light and shadow to represent his idea of vertical cities. His Manga-styled work is inspired by ancient Shinto temples, and how they can be reinterpreted into a new paradigm of the modern high-rise. Andrea discussed how important an interior perspective would be in ‘selling’ the scheme, and finding equilibrium in distribution of potential residents.

Andrea was only with us for an hour, however her expertise was useful for everyone involved and those listening who took a break from their own designs. Over the coming week, students will be working hard on moving their ideas into a visual output, in preparation for the final review, which is now looming only two weeks away.
