Students gathering around the table at a masters workshop

Here at Radix Studio we are always exploring new ways to give back to the industry, in particular we strive to involve ourselves with the next generation of architects. As a result of this ambition we have partnered with the University of Portsmouth School of Architecture Media Hub to offer our services in teaching explorative design and fabrication methods to students from the undergraduate and postgraduate levels alike.

It has been my role to engage with this partnership as lead collaborator, resultantly, I have been contributing to several sessions and workshops over the past few months which have been focused on a wide variety of topics. These have ranged from: Parametric design and Grasshopper, Quelea and agent based Generative design, Environmental analysis tools, and even fabrication workshops focused on the use of 3D printers. The response to these sessions thus far has remained relatively positive with many students beginning to adopt some of the discussed approaches into their design work which is very exciting for everyone involved. For example students have used tools such as Quelea to explore swarm behaviors as a means of generating organic forms which simply would not have been possible in traditional software solutions such as Sketchup or Revit. Moreover, the use of 3D printing is offering them a chance to fabricate intricate form in little to no time, such that they can have tangible results beyond just a software model for their efforts.

Ultimately this relationship with the University of Portsmouth reflects a common goal of diversity, exploration, and an persuit of looking outside of traditional typologies and paradigms in order to find practical and effective design solutions. Something which is core to our ethos here at Radix and we look forward to what more this partnership can offer in the near future.
