RIBA Mentoring Scheme 2017 -2018

We were assigned to visit our mentors for our RIBA Mentoring Scheme and our location was allocated in Winchester. Adam Architecture is one of the leading architectural firm that specialise in classical architecture in modern era. Their sense of proportionality and preserving English heritages through classical architecture is very encouraging because they are only focused on such type of architectural language. We were greeted by Wayne Reekes, and was very helpful for our two meeting which was split during the month of December and February. He was very supportive for the fact we had our deadlines forward and was able to fit us in his busy schedule.

This trip was our first ever trip with other studios, however I (Dipen) and Emi was allocated to visit the firm, therefore, and Radix studio was provided with site visit experience and insight of how a medium – large architectural firm works.

In our first meeting, we were brief in the meeting at 10 0clock and our site visit to 20min away from the office. It was very cold and windy day but we managed to walk up to the top of the scaffolding and see how the installation works. The house is a lovely house for a family of 5. The classical architecture the firm thrives on could be seen on the house achieving the proportion and the English heritage sits surrounded by trees in a conservation area. We were given an understanding on how the projects works in a real time by the architect leading the project.

It was very amazing and a good experience for our knowledge towards detailing and understanding of different construction methods and materials involved. As, our day progressed to even colder weather, we found out all of the three architects who gave us an educational tour finished their Part 1 in the school of architecture, University of Portsmouth. They not only helped us with the tour and taught us some valuable skills on drawings or detailing but also motivated us to work diligently in our own individual BA3 projects.

On our second meeting in February, we were programmed to be in the office understanding the hierarchy and structure of the office. Wayne was very helpful and went through two of their completed projects helping us understanding the skeletal frames of planning and its planning application. We were even visited by one of their Urban master planning showing ranges of projects and giving us an insight of how critical decision are being made through years and years of planning and authorisation leading to the construction of the projects. They were very happy with our presence and we were very grateful to RIBA and the school of architecture, University of Portsmouth and of course Adam Architecture for providing us with a wonderful experience towards our future career.

In the end Radix studio was very happy when I and Emi brief during one of our meetings when we shared our experience. The response was very welcoming.

Back to the project now…..
